The type section is on the southern bank of Xigulan River, approximately 10 km northwest of the 727 Forestry Centre in Aihui County, Heilongjiang Province.

Synonym: (古兰河组) ; The Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Heilongjiang Province assigned this formation and Xigulanhe Fm, Niqiuhe Fm, Handaqi Fm and Jinshui Fm to Niqiuhe Fm in 1997. [The age of the Niqiuhe Fm is from top Silurian to the Middle Devonian]. The name of Gulanhe Formation is reserved herein for the need of more precise classification and correlation of the strata in this area.

The formation conformable contacts with the underlying Woduhe Fm

Upper contact

The formation conformable contacts with the Xigulanhe Fm of the Devonian.
